Susan Rita
Hawxhurst
March 7, 1944 – March 8, 2024
Susan Rita (Josephson) Hawxhurst was born on March 7, 1944, in Ridgway, Pennsylvania and passed away on March 8, 2024, at age 80 at Mount Sinai Hospital, in Miami Beach, Florida.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Hawxhurst, and parents, Isabelle and Arnold Josephson. She leaves behind her only son, Peter Hawxhurst, and young grandson, Axel Hawxhurst, whom she adored. She spoke often of her cousin David Craig Josephson and friend Janet Page Alligretto, who reside in Pennsylvania, among other family members.
Susan graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she majored in teaching and art. There she met Wayne, and both became art teachers. They settled in Key West and were married for more than 42 years until his passing.
Susan later changed professions and became a Community Service Supervisor for the Monroe County Social Services Department, from which she retired after 30 years.
Susan found people fascinating and loved giving little gifts to others who helped her on her holiday projects.
Both Susan and Wayne were loyal members of the Key West Moose Lodge and attended many fun events in their younger years. Susan enjoyed her owl collection, sunflowers and QVC; She especially was happy spending time with her 2-year-old grandson, Axel. She loved the ocean, but never learned how to swim.
In her final days, she was very grateful to have the care and attention from Dr. Covington, her loyal aide, Olga Soriano, and long-time friend Helen Garcia, who spent much of their time with her throughout her failing health.
A thank you to Donna LaTorre, Sandy Archer and others who showed her compassion.
We pray that she is forgiven of any wrongdoing in her life and is reunited with loved ones on the other side. She will be put to rest in Ridgway, Pennsylvania in her family plot.
A funeral service will be held at The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1010 Windsor Lane in Key West, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26.
All arrangements are entrusted to Key West Mortuary 328 Truman Avenue Key West, Florida.
