Obituary

Kelly Jean Koenig (nee Bick), of Key West, Florida went to God in a complete state of Grace on July 12, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Kelly was born to Russell Daniel Bick (Air Force MSGT) and Rose Cecille Bick in Altus, Oklahoma. Kelly's father died in September 1964, when she was two years old. She and her family then moved to Key West, Florida, where her maternal grandparents, Dario and Rosa Perez, lived. The youngest of six children, Kelly and her siblings shared a life of love, laughter and adventure.

Kelly graduated from Mary Immaculate High School where she was a member of the Mariners cheerleading squad and volleyball team and was Homecoming Queen. She attended Florida Keys Community College and went on to attain a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication from the University of Florida.

After returning to Key West from college, Kelly and her future husband, Tim, fell in love in the summer of 1985 and were later married at Saint Mary Star of the Sea Church (now Basilica) on October 20, 1990. Kelly and Tim raised three beautiful children together: Rosalee Christine (Rosie), Mary Emma (Emmy), and John Russell (Rusty), all Florida State University graduates. Although she was a proud Florida Gator, her heart was always with her children wherever they were, so she became a proud Seminole too.

She dedicated her life to raising their children, working at Mary Immaculate Star of the Sea School while her children were in attendance, and later working in the rectory at the Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea until 2024.

Kelly was a devout Catholic who loved volunteering for the Star of the Sea Catholic Mission on Stock Island and The Soup Kitchen. She participated in Perpetual Adoration for almost 20 years, and she regularly read at daily Mass. Kelly was an avid reader, a love which she shared with and instilled in her children and grandchildren. She loved jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles and yard sales. She inherited a love of sewing from her grandmother and mother, which led to one of her first jobs as a seamstress making swimsuits for Peaches of Key West on Duval Street. She would often make clothing, drapes, slipcovers, toys and gifts for her children, family and friends. She loved to cook and made the best banana bread, picadillo, and black beans and rice.

Kelly was preceded in death by her grandparents Dario Anthony Perez and Rosa Lee Perez, her father Russell Daniel Bick (Air Force MSGT), her mother Rose Cecille Perez Bick, and her stepfather Arthur Leonte Valladares.

She is survived by her husband Tim, their children Rosie Hayes (Jake Hayes), Emmy McDowell (Ian McDowell), and Rusty Koenig, grandchildren Kaden Walter Hayes and Keely Nora Hayes, her siblings Mary Suzanne Bick Park, Michael Anthony Bick, Rebecca Lynn Bick O'Neill, Patricia Ann Bick Mousseau, and Catherine Rose Bick Powers, and her nephews and nieces Alvin Frazier, Michael Frazier, Max Powers, Teague Powers, Amber Bick, Michele Parsons, David Parsons, Patrick Koenig Jr., Bradley Koenig, and Sarah Koenig Browne.

Kelly was an inspiration to anyone who crossed her path. She was giving, kind, pure of heart, peaceful and courageous. She leaves a giant hole in the hearts of the people closest to her.

"A Rosary service will be held at the Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea at 9:15 am on July 23rd." The Mass of Christian Burial (Catholic Funeral Service) will be held at The Basilica of Saint Mary Star of the Sea at 10:00 am on the morning of Tuesday, July 23rd.
