Joseph Russell, born July 12, 1943, in Key West, Florida, to the late Joseph Russell and Lydia Roberts. Joseph affectionately known throughout Key West as “Toe Joe”, peacefully entered eternal rest on Friday, June 26,2026, at the age of 82. A beloved patriarch, faithful servant of God, and treasured member of the Key West community, Joseph lived a life defined by faith, kindness, laughter and service.

Raised by a devoted, God-fearing mother, Joseph developed a deep love for the Lord at an early age. He was baptized at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, where he remained a faithful member throughout his life. His dedication to his church was evident throughout his many acts of service, including ringing the church bell each Sunday morning and faithfully serving at the altar for many years.

Joseph attended Douglass High School and graduated with the Class of 1963. After graduation, he began his career working at the Naval Base before joining the Key West Public School System, where he faithfully served for more than 20 years until his retirement. His strong work ethic and quiet dedication earned him the respect of coworkers, students and the community he loved.

Joseph cherished spending time with family, especially travelling to West Palm Beach to visit his beloved cousins and extended family.

To nearly everyone in Key West he was simply “Toe Joe”. He never met a stranger. His warm smile, generous heart, and infectious personality made him a friend to all. Whether riding his bicycle through town, waving to neighbors, or stopping to chat with anyone he met, Joseph spread joy wherever he went.

One of Joseph’s greatest pleasures was dancing. The Elks Lodge and the V.F.W. were his favorite places where he enjoyed spending evenings on the dance floor surrounded by his friends. He especially loved showing off what he proudly called his “MC Hammer” dance moves, bringing smiles and laughter to everyone around him. He also enjoyed playing dominoes and being a faithful Mason and Shriner member.

Joseph was united in marriage to Franklean. Although they had no children together, the great love of his life was Phyllis Storr, who preceded him in death. Their enduring companionship remained one of the most meaningful relationships of his life.

Joseph fought a good fight with grace, courage and unwavering faith. On June 26, 2026, he peacefully answered God’s call home, entering eternal rest while holding firmly to his faith in his Savior.

Joseph leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving siblings, Evangeline Washington, Lemuel Russell, Ethel Simmons and Valerie Gary; daughter, Raeshawn Aelogn; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends whose lives were forever enriched by his presence.
