A modern renaissance man passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the age of 81 from illness in the Florida Keys. Born in Saguerties, NY, May 27, 1944, to Jean Murray Rand and Clifford Foster Rand in what would become in true Von Hilde form, the hospital caught fire from a bolt of lightning just after his birth.

His stepfather, Frank Baynard Hildebrandt a Lt. Col. in the US Army, they spent many years abroad in Japan, Turkey and several States in the US. Dave spent most of his life in Key West and Little Torch Key. He was a parachute rigger in the Navy and a Vietnam Veteran. A modern renaissance man; musician, painter, pilot, motorcyclist, car and boat enthusiast, automotive mechanic, fisherman, diver, surfer, card and billiard player, backgammon expert, construction and storyteller. He loved the art of conversation and could speak a few words in many languages putting people at ease, having numerous friends and making them laugh. He helped build many structures and motorcycles in Key West. He had several close lifelong friends, a testament to his character.

He is survived by his wife Kim L. Ashley, his 3 children, Lisa M.M.H. (Crespo), Timothy James, David James, grandson James David, brother Timothy Murray and ex-wife Marie C. (Mimi) Pambrun.

Services at Geiger Key Marina, Thursday, January 22nd at 2pm, interment services with military honors expected this Summer at Southern Keys Cemetery on Big Coppitt Key. In lieu of flowers donations accepted to Kim Hildebrandt, 27917 Coral Shores Drive, Little Torch Key, FL 33042.
