Calvin Alexander
Carey
December 28, 1963 – December 5, 2023
Calvin Alexander Carey, affectionately known as "CC," was born in Key West, Florida, on December 28, 1963, to the late Miriam "PT" Allen Henderson Carey and Roosevelt "Buddy" Carey. He entered the world as a twin and the 11th child among 12 siblings. Calvin attended Monroe County Public Schools and later found employment with Pools by Otis, The La Concha, Labor Finders, and, for the past 14 years, TJ Maxx.
A dependable and hardworking man, Calvin greeted life with a smile, making friends wherever he went. He was a kind, gentle soul who never complained, always ready to lend a helping hand. Calvin filled his life with activities he loved: fishing, riding his bike, singing, and listening to R&B Old School music, and creating his specialty dish, Conch salad. His passion extended to cheering for his favorite sports teams, The Miami Heat and the San Francisco 49ers, while enjoying a cold Bush beer.
Calvin's early involvement with the Key West Junkanoos showcased his musical talents. He learned to play the horn and other instruments from watching his uncles and their friends, later passing on the legacy to a new generation of musicians.
On Tuesday, December 5, 2023, Calvin peacefully departed his earthly life at Lower Keys Medical Center, awakening in eternal life in heaven after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Miriam; father, Roosevelt; sister, Theresa Henderson Lusain; and brother, Gilbert Paul Carey. Calvin is survived by his loving and long-time companion, Dolores Betancourt, her children, and grandchildren. His devoted siblings include Alvin "Jar" Henderson of Orlando, FL, Ernest Henderson of Tacoma, WA, Zola Henderson Knowles of Brandon, FL, Cobina Carey Wilson of New York, Rachel Carey Blocker of Darien, GA, Reginald Carey of Key West, FL, Frederick Carey of Key West, FL, Nelson Carey of Colorado Springs, CO, and his beloved twin brother, Melvin Carey of Darien, GA. He is also mourned by his Aunt Eureka "Girly" Stevens of Key West, FL, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and co-workers.
Memorial services will be held at Key West Mortuary Chapel, located at 328 Truman Avenue, at 12 noon on Saturday, December 9, 2023.
